In the studio, I always feel drawn to modes of creating in which complexity arises out of the aggregation of simple, cyclical actions, such as mark-making in repeating patterns, carving, stitching, or weaving. I am fascinated by the way that utilizing these ancient, elemental processes connects me to the creative spirit that makes us all human, and by the notion that nature’s grandest designs are created in much the same way, through incremental, mundane processes - wind and water wearing on rock, the slow accretion of changes as cells divide and multiply. When I am making this work, I experience a shift in the passing of time, an untethering from intention. Despite the laborious nature of some of the processes I use, I feel like I simply set the parameters and let the work make itself, in a way. The resulting balance of structured, intentional design against intuitive and spontaneous form never fails to offer surprises and new questions that drive me forward to make the next iteration.
